How to Arrange Furniture in a Large Living Room

The key to designing a spacious family room is defining multiple seating areas while keeping the space cohesive. In this large living room layout, we anchored the room with a large high-performance sectional, providing ample seating for lounging and gatherings. We then incorporated four accent chairs, allowing for additional seating without closing off the space.

The L-shaped sectional anchors the primary seating area, creating a natural focal point and pairing beautifully with a substantial solid wood coffee table for visual balance. Two accent chairs in front of the fireplace form a conversation zone that feels intimate yet still connected to the rest of the space. On the other side, a pair of additional chairs offers a secondary lounging area—perfect for reading or quiet moments. Thoughtfully placed furniture defines clear traffic flow throughout the room, maintaining an open, welcoming layout without feeling overcrowded.

This space marries rustic charm with contemporary clean lines, softened by earthy neutrals and organic textures. Every piece was chosen to feel intentional—grounded in nature, but styled for modern living.

1. Statement Lighting: Layered for Impact

Lighting is essential in a large room, and we used multiple light sources to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. A bold, sculptural chandelier serves as the room’s anchor, drawing the eye upward to emphasize the impressive ceiling height. Art sconces above the large-scale paintings highlight the artwork while adding an intimate glow. Shelf sconces on the built-ins add depth and interest while illuminating decorative objects. Table and floor lamps provide soft, ambient lighting, ensuring the room feels inviting in the evenings.

2. The Focal Wall: Lime Slurry Brick Feature

One of the most striking elements in this room is the 17-foot floor-to-ceiling brick wall, painted using Romabio Lime Slurry. This treatment adds incredible depth and texture, creating an aged, organic feel while still feeling fresh and modern. The muted tones perfectly complement the room’s neutral palette and rustic materials.

3. Custom 17’ Drapery: A Showstopping Window Treatment

The window wall is a defining feature of this room, and we made sure to highlight it with custom drapery from Everhem. The combination of sheers and full-length drapes softens the space, adding movement and elegance while allowing for light control and privacy. The scale of these 17-foot drapes enhances the grandeur of the space, making the ceilings feel even taller.

4. Timeless, Textured Rug

A room of this size requires a rug that can ground the furniture while maintaining warmth. The handwoven wool and cotton rug by Amber Interiors for Loloi measures 11’6” x 15’, providing the perfect foundation for the seating arrangement. Its soft, organic texture adds warmth underfoot while complementing the rustic elements in the space.

5. Curated Art & Accessories

We styled the space with thoughtfully curated accessories to bring depth and personality. Two large-scale artworks by Kader Boly—‘Human Relations’ and ‘Afterword’—introduce an expressive, organic feel to the space.
