Eclectic Traditional Powder Bathroom Featuring Bold Wallpaper

Powder bathrooms may be small, but they are some of the best rooms in the house for taking a design risk. You are not committing to wallpapering an entire living room or painting your whole kitchen green—although, for the record, we support both when done well. A powder room gives you the chance to create one highly memorable, personality-filled moment.

For Project Eclectic Traditional, also known as Project Equestrian Traditional, we treated this powder bathroom like a tiny jewel box. The goal was to pull together the rich, colorful palette used throughout the home and create a space that felt bold, classic, and a little unexpected.

This eclectic traditional powder bathroom featuring bold wallpaper centers around William Morris’s iconic Strawberry Thief wallpaper, layered with deep burgundy, earthy green, warm brass, and crisp marble-style flooring. The result is a moody, colorful powder room that feels old-world and fresh at the same time.

Key Design Features:

William Morris-style bird + floral wallpaper

The wallpaper was the clear starting point for this powder bathroom. William Morris’s Strawberry Thief is one of those patterns that instantly brings history, movement, and charm to a room. The blues, greens, peaches, reds, and soft neutrals in the print gave us a beautiful palette to build from—and helped connect this small space to the rest of the home.

Because the wallpaper carries so much personality, we balanced it with cleaner, more tailored elements. That contrast is what keeps the space feeling elevated instead of overly busy. The pattern gets to be the star, while the surrounding finishes quietly support it. It’s maximalist in the best way—vibrant, storied, and timeless.

Soft green wainscoting

To deepen the room, we paired the wallpaper with green wainscoting and a matching green ceiling painted in Dried Thyme by Sherwin-Williams. Wrapping the color onto the ceiling made the room feel more intentional and immersive—less like a small powder bath, and more like a beautifully finished little jewel box.

Traditional burgundy vanity

We almost did a white vanity in this powder room, and it would have been lovely. Safe, classic, completely pretty. But with the William Morris Strawberry Thief wallpaper, green wainscoting, and all the rich color woven throughout the rest of the home, this room was asking for something with a little more depth.

The deep burgundy vanity became the grounding moment the space needed. It pulls from the warmer tones in the wallpaper, plays beautifully with the brass details, and gives the room a rich, furniture-like quality without feeling heavy. Topped with a gorgeous marble surface, it still feels timeless and traditional—but far more collected and unexpected than a white vanity would have been.

I am so glad my clients trusted the vision, because this bold choice is what made the powder room come alive. Sometimes the “almost” choice is pretty, but the brave choice is what makes the room.

Heirloom mirror

A bold contrast to all the warm tones, this oversized heirloom mirror adds structure and plays beautifully with the vanity’s crisp lines.

Polished Nickel plumbing + accessories

From the sconces to the faucet and towel bars, the nickel brings warmth and elegance, with just the right amount of vintage appeal. This line also comes in a gorgeous brass!

White marble-look floor tile

Classic and clean, this flooring adds lightness underfoot and keeps the patterned walls from overwhelming the space.

Brass, Blue, and a Hint of Equestrian Charm

The accessories and lighting brought in just the right amount of drama. A brass heirloom-style mirror adds warmth and age, while the blue-trimmed double sconces tie back to the cooler tones in the wallpaper. The horse knocker towel hook gives a subtle nod to the client’s deep equestrian and ranching roots.

That balance mattered throughout the whole project. We wanted the home’s equestrian influence to feel personal and inherited—not overly literal. In this powder room, that meant one charming detail, layered into a much broader traditional design story.

Why This Powder Bathroom Works

The beauty of this space is in the mix. It is colorful, traditional, moody, and playful—but still polished. The old-world wallpaper brings the romance, the green millwork adds depth, the burgundy vanity gives richness, and the brass details keep everything feeling warm and timeless.

It is a great reminder that small rooms do not have to be an afterthought. In fact, powder bathrooms are often the perfect place to use a favorite wallpaper, try a deeper paint color, or bring in a detail that feels a little more adventurous than you might choose for a larger room.

For anyone looking for eclectic traditional powder bathroom featuring bold wallpaper inspiration, this space is proof that a small room can carry a lot of personality, especially when the palette, pattern, and details all work together.
