For Project Eclectic Traditional or also called Project Equestrian Traditional, we transformed a dated entry into a colorful traditional entryway filled with pattern and personality by layering bold wallpaper, fresh paint, a tailored stair runner, and heirloom furnishings that already meant something to the family. The goal wasn’t to erase the traditional character of the home—it was to wake it up.
The new palette of peach, blue, green, gold, and deep brown feels classic but not quiet. The staircase now feels intentional and polished, the heirloom secretary and artwork have room to shine, and each corner of the entry has its own collected moment. It’s traditional with a little wink—which, frankly, is my favorite kind of traditional.

Key Design Features:
We used a classic William Morris paper in a warm tan/gold and ivory palette—it creates instant charm and makes the whole space feel timeless and intentional.
The entry table has classic turned legs and a neutral finish that lets the layered styling do the talking.
A traditional blue rug (budget friendly and high performance) layered with a jute mat adds softness, color, and texture—plus it’s super practical for a high-traffic zone.
Collected-feeling art adds personality and a bit of whimsy. It doesn’t have to match—just feel curated and meaningful.
Painting the door a beautiful light blue is so charming and unexpected against the peach walls, trim and ceilings (Serendipity by Benjamin Moore).
We kept the layered the lighting—bold floral oversized lamps for symmetry, a semi-flush mount for sparkle, and a small pendant to anchor the space. Don’t miss the turned wood lamp on the secretary, complete with a green shade and horse head finial.
The mirror brings playful geometry in a muted sage green, while the herringbone stair runner by Patterson Flynn adds subtle pattern and polish.
This entry table moment might be one of my favorite little stories in the whole house.
The dramatic curved staircase gave us the perfect backdrop, but the round metal table, green velvet ottoman, and oversized heirloom lamp brought the warmth. I love how the lamp’s blue ceramic flowers add such a delicate, unexpected detail against the stronger equestrian-inspired pieces.
It’s traditional, but not too buttoned-up.
The lamp is one of those wonderfully personal pieces that instantly gives a room soul. It adds height, history, a little drama, and just enough blue to tie back to the front door and other blue moments throughout the home.
Some pieces do more than fill a corner.
This heirloom secretary once sat off to the side in my client’s grandmother’s kitchen, always open and always in use. It held the phone, the bills, birthday cards, personal notes, stamps, letter openers, lipstick, post-it notes, and all the little everyday things that quietly tell the story of a life well lived.
Her grandfather used it most evenings to call the family restaurants, and when the drawers were cleaned out years later, old cordless phones and even livestock show passes were found tucked behind them.
For this entry, we gave the secretary a fresh moment of its own—layered with a green mirror, brass accents, and a chair reupholstered in the cutest green fox hunt fabric.
Because the best interiors aren’t just beautiful. They remember.
Why it works
This eclectic traditional entryway design is proof that the “insignificant” spaces are often the most impactful. A little wallpaper, a few meaningful layers, and a touch of bold color can go a long way in making your home feel like you—right from the front door.
