When designing a space, the right lighting does more than illuminate—it transforms. Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood, bringing warmth, and adding style to every corner of a home. In this contemporary whole home lighting plan, where Contemporary meets Rustic Industrial, we carefully selected each fixture to seamlessly blend sleek modernity with raw, rustic charm. Let’s take a room-by-room tour of how we created a cohesive, stylish, and functional lighting plan.
The family room is all about creating an inviting atmosphere while keeping the design bold and functional. To achieve that, we chose a stunning chandelier with clean, linear lines and a brass finish (plus agate stone!) that adds sophistication without overpowering the space. The two historic nickel art sconces over the oversized artwork (placed above the sectional) provide warm, intentional lighting, casting a soft glow while maintaining a cohesive industrial look.
For the entryway, we wanted to make a statement with the lighting fixture. We chose an eye-catching chandelier with an industrial fan-inspired design, adding both character and elegance to the space. The adjacent hallway features a sleek plaster and brass flush mount that continues the elegant yet industrial theme throughout. This blend of contemporary style with rustic materials creates a seamless flow from the moment you step into the home.
In the kitchen, functionality and aesthetics go hand in hand. Three fluted ombre sconces placed over the kitchen’s windows add both style and mood lighting, while the dark graphite pendants with brass chain also add functional style. With their exposed metalwork, patina brass chain detailing, and unique finish combination, these pendants have an elevated, industrial vibe. There’s more! Two additional linen shade sconces add interest above a stone shelf, flanking the range.
They feature a chunky rod-shaped arm of Patina Brass that rests between a unique wedge-like backplate for a bold modern look that is also very usable. Lastly, another brass sconce was added above the wood floating shelves in the beverage nook, perfect for dimmed lighting while making coffee in the morning. The balance of these 4 different fixtures used in the kitchen create a well-lit and inviting space that’s as practical as it is beautiful. This balance perfectly showcases how to choose the right light fixture for your room by focusing on both function and style.
In the dining room, a unique linear chandelier makes a statement without overwhelming the space. Champagne crystal shades elevate the airy structure of this linear chandelier. Like the delicate, transparent wings of a dragonfly, antiqued brass steel accents seem to take flight from the slender antique brass canopy. The warm light it casts over the dining table creates an inviting atmosphere, ideal for family gatherings or entertaining guests.
The formal living room’s centerpiece is a sculptural chandelier that balances a severe bronze finish with an elegant antique brass frame. The bronze plates face upwards, diffusing the light and creating a warm, even glow. The combination of bronze and brass finishes ties in with the overall palette of the home. This fixture, along with simple yet elegant stone and brass sconces (flanking the fireplace), allow ambiance and style to coexist beautifully.
In the office, we opted for a vintage-inspired flush mount with fluted glass, adding warmth without overwhelming the space. For the powder bathroom, long vertical sconces sit atop the beautiful Ann Sacks mosaic marble tile, adding a touch of elegance and warmth. For additional bathroom inspiration and the perfect bath light fixtures, you can find that here.
Often overlooked, the laundry room features a matte black and brass flush mount, maintaining the home’s overall industrial aesthetic while providing practical lighting. This fixture proves that even the most functional spaces can benefit from thoughtful design.
How to Choose the Right Kind of Light Fixture for Your Home
Choosing the right lighting for your home involves considering both the function and style of each space. In open areas like the family room and kitchen, statement chandeliers and pendants work well to create focal points, while sconces and flush mounts offer more subtle illumination in hallways, bathrooms, and smaller spaces.
Tips for Choosing Coordinating Light Fixtures for Your Entire Home
A whole house lighting design plan should prioritize coordination and flow. By using complementary finishes—like the different brass and bronze variations, (plus some historic nickel), in this home—you can ensure that each fixture ties into the next, even when rooms serve different functions. Mixing statement pieces with more minimal fixtures keeps the design balanced and creates harmony.
Crafting a whole house lighting design doesn’t have to feel overwhelming! We hope that after our tips you feel more confident in selecting the perfect light fixtures for your home. Need extra support? Book a video consultation with Peggy today!
