Christmas Decorations You’ll Love // Peggy’s Picks for a Warm, Layered Home

This season at our house, it’s all about creating collected holiday magic — the kind that feels joyful, nostalgic, and deeply personal. Christmas here is never minimal. It’s velvet bows in every color, toile and tartan, brass and vintage bells, layered greenery, twinkle lights, and tiny vignettes that tell our family’s story. It’s classic Christmas, but with color, charm, and a few surprises.

From the staircase draped in lights to the mantel, dining spaces, and our Christmas village, every detail was designed to celebrate beauty, faith, and family. This year, my home was professionally photographed by @amandaproudfit while decked out for Christmas — complete with fresh florals and wreaths by @arianafloral and two beautifully styled tablescapes by @southernmountaingirl.

I’ve rounded up my favorite finds of the season — the pieces that brought our home to life and inspired this year’s look. From colorful ribbons to layered greenery and a few meaningful details, these are my Peggy’s Picks for Christmas — curated to help you bring that same warmth and joy into your own home.

Trends We’re Loving This Year

This year’s Christmas decorations are all about warmth, color, and texture—joyful but refined, nostalgic yet fresh. I’m loving how holiday décor is moving toward a more handcrafted, layered look, full of natural materials and softly saturated color. Think velvet ribbons, pleated paper ornaments, ceramic details, and greenery that feels lush and intentional.

Below are three of my favorite holiday decorating trends this year and simple ways to bring them into your home.

1. Bows, Reimagined

Bows are definitely back this year—but in a more sophisticated way. They feel romantic yet edited, a beautiful way to connect traditional holiday charm with modern spaces. I love using large velvet bows along my stair railing intertwined with twinkle lights—it feels nostalgic but elevated.

As I shared with Real Simple, bows are one of my favorite ways to bring personality to Christmas decorating: they’re classic yet current, a timeless detail that instantly makes a space feel intentional and festive. Try clip-on bows on your trees and wreaths, slender brass bow ornaments, or even a single statement bow as your tree topper. Let’s just say I’m loving the oversized bow trend.

As shown above and shared with Real Simple, I love incorporating Christmas artwork or prints to add little more Christmas cheer to your kitchen, which can be tricky to decorate!

2. Layered Texture & Meaning

I’m seeing Christmas décor move away from glossy and glittery and toward a more tactile, handcrafted feel, with a more retro or vintage vibe. It’s all about mixing materials — velvet, ceramic, paper, linen — and creating depth through contrast and layering.

Velvet globes with subtle embroidery, softly flocked baubles, and pleated paper trees add sculptural interest and warmth without overwhelming a space. I love how these pieces invite you to slow down and take in the details — how they feel all collected together as much as how they look.

I also love mixing tactile materials with something a little soulful. This O Holy Night Sheet Music Print is one of my favorite pieces to bring out each year — it layers beautifully with garland or artwork and adds an understated, heartfelt touch that balances all the shimmer.

Color-wise, I’m leaning into classic holiday hues with a twist: deep greens, rich reds, moody blues, and soft blush. They make your home feel cheery and festive without overwhelming the space, especially when layered with natural greenery and warm metallics.

Retro holiday décor works best when it feels collected rather than themed. These quilted stockings, handmade by my late mother, set the tone here, rooted in tradition and memory. From there, the look leans into vintage-inspired greenery, layered with playful bottle-brush trees in a modern color palette. It’s nostalgic, but still feels fresh.

3. Lush Garland & Layered Greenery (as your decor foundation!)

After layering in all that color and texture, nothing completes the look quite like greenery. Garlands and wreaths are the ultimate connectors — they bridge rooms, frame light, and make every surface feel alive. I love running garland down the staircase or draping it across a door opening, windows, or mantel, accented with velvet bows and tiny fairy lights. It’s nostalgic but intentional, that classic “Christmas at home” look with a fresh twist. Make sure to not stop at the greenery – as I shared with Martha Stewart, I am seeing the ultra-minimal “greenery-only” approach losing steam.

This year, I partnered with @arianafloral and @southernmountaingirl to bring even more layered beauty into our holiday décor. Their floral designs and styling details added fun pattern, color, texture, and a touch of magic to the season only fresh florals and greenery can bring.
