Ralph Lauren-Inspired Equestrian Traditional Kitchen Design

This traditional kitchen holds a special place in my heart—not just for its layered textures and timeless charm, but because it belongs to a very special family. They come from a deep equestrian background, and that legacy quietly inspired the palette, materials, and soul of the space. We leaned into texture, tone, and contrast to create a new traditional kitchen design that feels layered, real-life ready (for their family of 7), and full of personality. Think traditional bones with a European edge, Ralph Lauren-inspired warmth, and a touch of equestrian sophistication.

Whether you’re looking for traditional kitchen design ideas or want to recreate this layered, Ralph Lauren kitchen style, here’s everything we used to bring it to life. If you’re drawn to stone countertops, warm wood cabinetry, and a hint of European flair, this kitchen from Project Eclectic Traditional may be just the inspiration you need.

Ralph Lauren Inspired, Eclectic traditional kitchen with Blue Ijen quartzite island and backsplash, dark walnut and off-white cabinetry, mixed metals, and a rust-toned vintage runner.

The Blue Ijen Quartzite Kitchen: Ralph Lauren-Inspired Design

Blue Ijen Quartzite was the foundational piece for this kitchen that we built the rest of the design choices on. 💙 This blue and bold, high-movement natural stone instantly sets the tone for a Ralph Lauren-inspired home that balances playfulness, soul, and traditional sophistication—along with a rich family equestrian heritage that informed every detail.

The Blue Ijen quartzite is a true showstopper—moody and full of character, it anchors the space with a touch of drama. We paired it with creamy off-white cabinetry on the perimeter and rich, dark hickory wood lowers and island for warmth and contrast. Black Mist granite keeps the look grounded, while aged brass hardware and polished nickel plumbing fixtures bring subtle richness through a mix of metals.

A glass-front cabinet and appliance garage, as well as a large range alcove, nod to classic European kitchens, blending practicality with old-world charm. A rust-red vintage-style runner softens the stone and ties the palette together—adding that inviting warmth every traditional kitchen design needs.

And don’t even get us started on the lighting, including three Ralph Lauren leather sconces above the sink wall that overlooks the large sunroom, complete with panoramic Midwest views. Together, these elements create a new traditional kitchen design that feels timeless yet current—layered, livable, and personal, with just enough offbeat charm to make it unmistakably their own.

Key Design Features

Why it works

A Traditional Kitchen Designed for Real Family Life

This kitchen was designed to feel timeless, layered, and deeply livable for a family of seven. While the materials are refined, the space was never meant to feel formal or untouchable. Every decision needed to support real daily rhythms: cooking, gathering, homework, snacks, conversation, and the constant movement of family life.

The result is a traditional kitchen with warmth and polish, but also ease. It feels collected rather than overly decorated, classic without feeling predictable, and personal without leaning too heavily into a theme.

Ralph Lauren-Inspired Warmth and Equestrian Influence

Because the family has deep equestrian roots, we wanted the kitchen to carry a subtle sense of heritage without feeling themed. We pulled from the feeling of equestrian style: warmth, leather, patina, contrast, tailored details, and a slightly collected Ralph Lauren sensibility.

The leather Ralph Lauren sconces above the sink wall bring in that reference beautifully. They add structure and sophistication, while still feeling relaxed and appropriate for an everyday kitchen. Paired with aged brass hardware, polished nickel plumbing, and warm wood cabinetry, the room has a layered richness that feels both classic and current.

Opening the Kitchen to the Sunroom

One of the most impactful changes was opening the kitchen to the adjoining sunroom. Previously, the sunroom sat behind a sliding glass door and felt separate from the rest of the home. Now, with entries on both sides of the kitchen and the former sink window opened completely into the sunroom, the two spaces feel connected and intentional.

This shift changed the way the home lives. The kitchen now flows naturally into a European-inspired sunroom with a breakfast table, sitting area, fireplace, sheer William Morris curtains, and panoramic views of the family’s land.

Instead of functioning as two separate rooms, the kitchen and sunroom now work together as one generous family gathering space.

A Kitchen That Feels Connected, Not Closed Off

The open connection to the sunroom also softens the kitchen. Kitchens can easily become dominated by hard surfaces—stone, cabinetry, appliances, tile, metal. By visually and physically connecting this kitchen to a room filled with upholstery, sheers, woven texture, a fireplace, and natural light, the entire space feels warmer and more inviting.

The sink wall now overlooks the sunroom rather than stopping at a window, which creates a beautiful sense of depth. It allows the kitchen to borrow light, views, and softness from the adjoining room, while still keeping the traditional structure and function of a working kitchen intact.

Classic Details with Practical Purpose

While the kitchen has plenty of traditional character, the layout and details were designed with function in mind. The appliance garage keeps everyday items accessible but tucked away. The glass-front cabinet adds display and charm without sacrificing useful storage. The large range alcove creates a focal point while giving the cooking zone a more architectural, European feel.

Closed storage on both sides of the range alcove and spice cabinets on the island ends help keep visual clutter low, which matters in any kitchen—but especially in a busy family home. The goal was a room that could handle everyday use while still feeling calm, beautiful, and pulled together.

A Layered New Traditional Kitchen

This kitchen is a study in contrast: bold stone and quiet cabinetry, warm wood and cool blue, aged brass and polished nickel, European references and American equestrian warmth. Each layer brings something different to the room, but together they create a space that feels cohesive and grounded.

That balance is what makes new traditional design so compelling. It honors classic forms and materials, but leaves room for personality, color, and a little unexpected charm.

Here, the result is a kitchen that feels timeless, highly personal, and ready for real life—exactly what a hardworking family kitchen should be.

Every element—lighting, tile, hardware, and styling—was chosen to reflect the family’s refined yet approachable lifestyle. The result is a kitchen that feels both classic and personal, balancing Ralph Lauren sophistication with subtle nods to their equestrian heritage.
