From the delicate trim of a lampshade to the bold edge of a mirror, vanity, or upholstered ottoman, scallops can feel playful, tailored, traditional, or even contemporary. It all comes down to the scale, material, color, and what you pair them with.
What I love most about scallops is their ability to add charm without requiring a major design commitment. A small scalloped accessory can wake up a quiet corner, while a larger architectural or furniture detail can become the moment that gives the entire room its character. And although scallops may be especially popular right now, they have appeared in furniture and architecture for centuries—which means they can feel much more timeless than trendy when used thoughtfully.

This month’s Peggy’s Picks is a curated collection of scalloped home decor I’m loving right now—pieces that bring curves, character, and a little unexpected charm into a room without requiring an entire redesign.
If you’ve been noticing scallops everywhere lately and wondering how to use them in your own home without things becoming a little too sweet, this edit is a great place to start.
Scale completely changes the personality of a scallop.
A tiny scalloped edge on a lampshade, picture frame, tray, or pillow can feel subtle and almost tailored. Increase the scale, and suddenly the same shape becomes a statement—a large scalloped mirror, dramatic headboard, oversized valance, or furniture silhouette can become one of the defining features of a room.
This is actually something I recently talked about with Sunset Magazine when they asked me about the resurgence of scalloped details in interiors. My advice? If you’re hesitant, start small. You don’t need an entire scalloped sofa to participate. 😉 One interesting little edge may be all a room needs.
Scallops do not need to appear everywhere, but repeating the general curve helps the detail feel intentional. In this tween bedroom from Project Rustic Contemporary, we incorporated scalloped ottomans, a rattan floor lamp, a vanity sconce, and a bold brass mirror.
None of the pieces match exactly, but they share a similar softness and movement. Repeating that curved language throughout the room makes the details feel connected rather than coincidental.
The same idea can be much more subtle. A scalloped lampshade might relate to the curved back of a chair, the arch of a mirror, or a rounded pattern within the rug. The repetition does not need to be obvious—it simply gives the eye a gentle path through the room.

Scallops naturally feel decorative, so I like to balance them with pieces that have cleaner, more tailored silhouettes. A scalloped mirror above a simple vanity, a curved lamp beside a streamlined nightstand, or a scalloped pillow on a structured sofa creates contrast and keeps the room from feeling overly sweet.
This balance is especially important when using several scalloped details in one space. Rather than combining them only with florals, ruffles, and other traditionally feminine elements, try pairing them with crisp upholstery, simple cabinetry, modern art, or a strong geometric pattern.
That little bit of tension is often what makes the scallop feel fresh.
The material can change the personality of a scallop just as much as its size.
Rattan and woven scallops feel relaxed, warm, and slightly nostalgic. Upholstered scallops bring softness and can feel playful or tailored depending on the fabric. Brass and metal versions add a more polished, sculptural quality, while painted wood or stone can make the shape feel architectural and substantial.
You do not need an entire collection of scalloped pieces to make the idea work. In fact, one unexpected detail is sometimes the most effective way to use it.
Try a scalloped tray on a coffee table, a lampshade on an otherwise simple lamp, a small wall shelf, a mirror in a powder room, or a pillow layered into your existing sofa arrangement. These are easy additions that bring personality without changing the overall direction of the room.
Once you introduce one scalloped element, look around for a subtle way to echo its curve. That may be all the room needs to feel connected and complete.
Scallops are charming, but they are also incredibly versatile. They can soften a contemporary room, add playfulness to a traditional space, or bring a vintage-inspired detail into a relaxed coastal or bohemian home.
The key is not using them simply because they are having a moment. Choose a scalloped piece because the shape brings something the room needs—softness, movement, contrast, or just a little joy.
Scallops are endlessly versatile and full of personality. They can feel classic or contemporary depending on their scale, material, and how they’re used, which is why scalloped home decor works beautifully everywhere—from bedrooms and living spaces to bathrooms and the smallest styled corners.
